Average joe's
JUST ANOTHER EXTRAORDINARY DAY
11 Jun

It wasn’t just your run-of-the-mill Friday night for the Average Joe’s.

“Yeah, I don’t think there’s any other way to put it besides “a crazy comeback”, explains captain Massimo Guido in the wake of a miraculous 7-6 win over Aces Friday night. “Five goals in 12 minutes… this is one we’ll never forget.”

It was a rather innocuous first half (and early season) for the 2017 summer champions, the Average Joe’s erasing an early 2-0 deficit to draw even heading into the second. Then the wheels came flying off. Four unanswered goals and it was 6-2 Aces with just a little over 10 minutes left in the game. “People watching from the stands could have guessed that we were down and out. But our team didn’t quit.”

Guido netted a quick pair and it was off to the races, with the Joe’s “putting pressure on the ball and countering with pace.” This time, Christopher Fernandez and Alex Balsamo made good on their chances, and it was 6-6 with just over 2 minutes left.

A tie wouldn’t have satisfied – not for a team eager to make good on a disappointing exit in last summer’s C3 Division semifinals. A team “looking for redemption.” And so Adamo Aversa scored the buzzer-beating game winner on a counter attack.

Now, everything is once again possible. “It was a moment of pure excitement.”
