LAVAL WOMEN - THE CHINK IN THEIR GREEN ARMOUR
30 Jan

The young ladies of FC Repentigny are a surprisingly decorated, eclectic and loyal bunch.

Some have played university ball with les Carabins, le Vert et Or and les Patriotes, while others never ventured past Double A. A few have even moonlighted for the World Police and Fire Games. “But one thing’s for sure,” declares Laurence Dallaire, the team’s 18-year-old leading goal getter: “the driving force behind our success is that, over the years, we’ve build real and lasting friendships while sharing that same passion for soccer.”

It’s been a largely successful ride for the decade-old team, including back-to-back stints at the Saputo Cup in 2016 and 2017. But a shared history is not without its perils.

Their four years in Totalcampo have also been marred by some heartbreaking encounters with Chelsea, the most traumatizing of which was a loss in the finals two years ago. The teams have split their regular season meetings in the FB1 Division this year, with only three points between them. However, despite the steady leadership of veteran captain Gabrielle Joseph and the surprise play of midfielder/striker Catherine Garofalo, the team continues to rely heavily on their defense to get them through tight games.

Any future encounters with their arch nemesis will be no different, insists Dallaire. “When we play against Chelsea, we play with three defenders. In fact, we have to defend ‘en bloque’, because they’re great on the counterattack.”
